[Album of Paris Crime Scenes]
Description
English: Alphonse Bertillon, the chief of criminal identification for the Paris police department, developed the mug shot format and other photographic procedures used by police to register criminals. Although the images in this extraordinary album of forensic photographs were made by or under the direction of Bertillon, it was probably assembled by a private investigator or secretary who worked at the Paris prefecture. Photographs of the pale bodies of murder victims are assembled with views of the rooms where the murders took place, close-ups of objects that served as clues, and mug shots of criminals and suspects. Made as part of an archive rather than as art, these postmortem portraits, recorded in the deadpan style of a police report, nonetheless retain an unsettling potency.

Notes Meurtre de M. Désiré Legrand, 54 ans, serrurier employé au matériel de chemin de fer à Ivry et demeurant à Paris, 12 rue Crozatier, pêcheur amateur assommé dans la nuit du 4 au 5 juillet à coups de mouton d'os, de pince-monseigneur et de pieds sur la tête pour le vol d'une trentaine de francs et laissé pour mort dans un fossé voisin de la Mare du Port-à-l'Anglais, entre le chemin de fer d'Orléans et la rue du Liégot à Ivry, où son cadavre est découvert le 4 juillet 1904.

Eugène Schuller (Thomas Schuller) dit La Limace, 17 ans au moment des faits, électricien, condamné à 20 ans de travaux forcés;
Auguste Bonnet (Louis Bonnet), 25 ans au moment des faits, maçon demeurant rue du Château-des-Rentiers, condamné à 12 ans de travaux forcés;
Charles-Hippolyte Bresson (Charles Bresson) dit Le Marquis d'Ivry, né le 23 février 1885 (19 ans au moment des faits), charretier. Arrêté, il livrz Bonnet et Schuller. Condamné à mort par la Cour d'Assises de la Seine (Paris) le 29 mars 1905, gracié le 21 mai 1905 et envoyé aux travaux forcés à perpétuité [1], [2] voir aussi Le Figaro du 17 juillet 1904.
