Notes Zur Zeit der Erstellung des Werkkatalogs der Gemälde Albert Ankers war dieses Bild noch nicht bekannt und ist deshalb dort nicht aufgeführt. Sehr wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um die Szene, deren Verkauf im Livre de vente - Ankers persönliches Verkaufsbuch - am 27. Dezember 1895 eingetragen ist: de M Lang probablement pour le vieillard buvant de la tisane, 500 Franken erhielt er dafür. (Dieser Herr Lang war ein eifriger Kunde des Künstlers, deshalb wohl bloss die Vermutung, dass der Betrag hierfür bestimmt war.) Es zeigt einen jener typischen Alten, die Albert Anker in Ins häufig Modell gesessen sind. Sie hatten Zeit und Musse, sich ihm zur Verfügung zu stellen. Auf der Ofenbank sitzend, löffelt der Dargestellte behutsam und konzentriert mit seiner Linken den Tee aus der unverwechselbaren, mit blauen Punkten und roter Wellenlinie verzierten Tasse, die nach wie vor zum Inventar des Inser Ateliers gehört und die wiederholt in Ankers Stillleben und Genreszenen ins Bild rückt. Anker hat häufig seine Kompositionen mit stilllebenartigen Einzelheiten angereichert: hier malte er zur Rechten des Mannes die zusammengefaltete Zeitung, auf der die Brille liegt - und das aus der Hosentasche gerutschte, rot gemusterte Taschentuch setzt einen farbigen Akzent in das ansonsten eher in Beige-, Grau- und Brauntönen gehaltene Gemälde. Auf dem wärmenden Ofen liegt die Kanne, darüber hängt ein Fellbündel. Rhythmisch verteilt sind die Weisstöne von Halstuch, Zeitung und Tasse. Auch die dunkle Mütze hebt sich von der hellen Wand stark ab. Das von Erfahrung und Mühsal geprägte Alter gehört - neben den Kinderwelten - zu Albert Ankers bevorzugten Themen, seine betagten Männer und Grossväter büssen trotz aller Entbehrung nichts von ihrer Würde ein. "L'homme s'intéresse à l'homme, il sera toujours le modèle par excellence." Dieses bekannte Anker-Zitat zeigt in schönster Weise des Künstlers Respekt vor den Menschen, die ihm mehr als nur ein malerisches Motiv bedeutet haben.[1]
