THE STEAMSHIP SANTA CLARA ENTERING MIRAELORES LOCKS UNDERTOW OF ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES, JUNE I9, I914. gate is 1,483,700 pounds, and it cost a little over four centsa pound. There are forty-six lock gates in the Canal, allmade of steel plates, riveted to structural steel frames. Theirtotal weight is 118,488,100 pounds. Vessels are raised orlowered in the locks at the rate of three feet a minute. Allgates and valves are operated by electricity. \essels are not permitted to pass through the locks undertheir own power, but are towed by electric locomotives, fourto a ship. These are among the most interesting features ofthe Canal, but one does not hear them called electric locomo-tives there. When I was a boy in Pennsylvania I used tolike to follow the tow path of the canal until I met a canalboat, and got a chance to help drive the mules.
