Description The Al-Farooq Mosque at 552-554 Atlantic Avenue between Third and Fourth Avenues in the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, which describes itself as one of the oldest Islamic centers in New York City, was founded in 1976. The building dates from 1928, and is registered as being owned by "Islamic Brotherhood, Inc.". The mosque has been described as having been "a center of radical Islamic thought in Brooklyn" and "a major spiritual and operational al-Qaeda hub in the United States before - and after - the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks." The AIA Guide to NYC describes the building as "Arabian Nights...Its spiral central column is a glazed candy cane, or Hollywood Bernini..."
