Description
English: Finial, Attie (or Akye) peoples, Côte d'Ivoire, Late 19th to early 20th century, Ivory

The use of ivory and the depiction of a seated pose are associated with wealth and power throughout Africa. An Attie (or Akye) ruler or dignitary could emphasize his authority or prominence by carrying a staff, cane or spear topped with this exquisitely carved ivory figure shown seated upon an imported chair. The figure's features and clothing suggest he is European. The pose reflects the respectful seated posture that Africans and informed foreign visitors adopt in formal situations when visiting a notable, viewing a ceremony or attending a public event.
