Description

Description: Army Lieutenant Edward W. Killgore was one of the Army pilots who flew the mail for the Post Office Department in the first three months of airmail service (May 18 August 9, 1918). Killgore autographed this photograph and presented it to Benjamin Lipsner. Lipsner, a former army captain, had resigned his military position to serve as the first Superintendent of the U.S. Airmail Service. The photograph is inscribed, "To the first superintendent of aerial mail, Capt BB Lipsner, from yours in the bog, Edward W. Killgore. During his tenure as an airmail pilot, Killgore had five forced landings, the most of his group. He made almost forty airmail trips, flying 5,670 miles with mail during his three months of service.
