During the last twenty years the cost of living haspractically doubled. If this continue for the next decade,it will be difficult to judge the economic and socialconsequences. On these barren acres, which science andbusiness enterprise will yet make fruitful, there is room forthousands of those who are now living in filth, poverty andobscurity in the congested centers of our large cities. Butthey must be able to possess themselves of the promisedland—they must be trained to the business of farming. Unclaimed resources.—So also in the southern states,where the growing season is long, rainfall plentifuland where every conceivable kind of food will grow andthrive, there is only a comparatively small percentage of thetotal area of the land under cultivation.
