Summary[edit]
DescriptionAffetonImpalingCockworthy YarnscombeChurch Devon.PNG |
English: 15th century stained glass in Yarnscombe Church, Devon, showing the arms of de Affeton of Affeton (Argent, a chevron engrailed between three fleurs-de-lys sable) impaling Cockworthy of Yarnscombe (Argent, a chevron between three cocks gules (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.475). This appears to relate to the marriage of Nicholas Stucley (b.1451) of Affeton, whose mother was Catherine de Affeton (d.1467), heiress of Affeton, and Thomasine Cockworthy (d.1477), daughter of John Cockworthy of Yarnscombe and widow of Robert Chudleigh. (See: Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.721, pedigree of Stucley) It is thus apparent that Nicholas Stucley was using the arms of his mother's family, not his own paternal arms. |
