29 de mayo de 1814. Recuerde esa fecha, porque fue la primera vez que un globo aerostático se lanzó en la ciudad de Betanzos, en honor al retornado rey Fernando VII. Desde entonces, la ciudad continuó elevando aerostatos en ocasiones puntuales y especiales: fiestas religiosas, visitas reales...

Pero no sería hasta 1875 cuando, de la mano de don Claudino Pita Pandelo, comenzó a elevarse el monumental Globo de Betanzos anualmente en las Fiestas de San Roque, cada 16 de Agosto.

Sus medidas (25 metros de altura por 50 de circunferencia) hacen de él el Globo de Papel más grande del mundo (sí, ha leído usted bien: está confeccionado en papel de 70 gr, recortado en planchas de 50 cm² y pegado con engrudo de harina de centeno), y sin lugar a dudas el que más almas reúne en su elevación: en la brigantina Plaza do Campo se reúnen cada año más de 50.000 personas, dispuestas a ver como el gigante de papel se eleva sobre sus cabezas, y a leer los chistes que adornan sus 16 cuarterones.

Pero, para los brigantinos, ver la elevación del globo no es un simple espectáculo de masas: es más que eso, es un sentimiento inexplicable, una mezcla de emociones indescriptible que hace de la noche del 16 de Agosto uno de los acontecimientos más señalados del calendario.
