Description

Family: Rutaceae Distribution: Common in open forests and often cultivated. This is a sacred tree for Hindus.Found in India, Srilanka and Java. 5-10 m tall deciduous tree. batk grey, smooth. Leaves 3 foliate, leaflets oblong, crenulate, base cuneate. Flowers whitish green in 5-10cm long axillary panicles. Calys 5, small cup shaped; petals 5 spreading, stamens up to 30 polydelphous, arranged around the disk, antherlobes oblong, extorse. ovary superior, 1 celled. Berry 5-10 cm in dia, globose/ woody,rind hard, greenih yellow. pulp orrange yellow, gummy, seeds slightly hairy. Fruit edible. used as a remedy for diarrhoea.The full ripe fruit is hypoglycemic. Photographed at Velugonda hills of Nellore district.
