Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Aegean Sea was sparkling with sunglint on July 16, 2018, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the scene.

The shiny, mirror-like appearance of the blue waters of the Aegean Sea is caused by an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight reflects off the surface of water at the same angle at a satellite sensor views it. When this happens, the result is a specular reflection of sunlight off the water and back at the satellite sensor.

Where the water is very smooth, the specular reflectance appears like a silver-toned mirror, but water surfaces disturbed by turbulence, waves, or wind don’t reflect directly back at the sensor. In these areas of roughened surface the water appears dark blue. Such turbulent areas are often found on the windward side of islands, where wind piles waves against the land. Dry, cool, winds from the north, called the Etesian winds, are common over the Aegean Sea during the summer.
