Summary[edit]

Description

On 8 April 1840, missionary Henry Williams delivered a copy of te Tiriti to his brother William Williams, who was based at the CMS mission in Tūranga (Gisborne). His task was to gather the signatures of rangatira from East Cape to Ahuriri (Napier). This became known as the East Coast Sheet (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195656934).

Meanwhile, on 22 May, trader James Fedarb left Tauranga for the Bay of Plenty. With him was the Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) Sheet (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195488783).

This 1853 British Admiralty Chart shows the locations of the East Coast and Bay of Plenty signings:

East Coast Sheet - Tūranga, Uawa (Tolaga Bay), Waiapu (Whakawhitira & Rangitukia), Tokomaru.

Bay of Plenty Sheet - Ōpotiki, Torere, Te Kaha, Whakatāne.

Surveyed by Commander B. Drury 1853.
