Summary[edit]
DescriptionAdmiral Togo as a Macaque or Monkey (Makak). This is the cover of the Russian magazine Budel'nik, issue no. 12, 1904.jpg |
English: This chauvinistic (racist) trope depicting Japanese as macaques is related to the derogative sobriquet used for the Japanese operatives during the Soviet intelligence operation, Maki Mirage. Makaki (that is the plural, macaques) referring to the Japanese was shortened to Maki with the same meaning, macaques. So the full name of Maki Mirage is actually Makaki Mirage, but this is too openly derogatory and racist towards one's foes, the Japanese so it was shortened to simply "Maki." The author S. Nikoaev's Maki Mirazh: iz istorii otechestvennykh spetssluzhb (Maki Mirage: From the History of the Fatherland’s Special Service), p. 49 tries to pass this off having occurred due to the Japanese troop's brutal treatments of the peoples of the Russian Empire during Intervention (1918-1922), but this cover disproves that (1904). The Chinese military also repeated the same tropes about the Japanese during the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Jon K. Chang has digitized this photo, cropping the cover and has made "touch ups" to the cover removing excessive discolorment and brown spots. Thus, copyright belongs to this author. |
