| Description | Adalbert Stifter, Brief an Anton Schlossar, Linz 23. Dezember 1867. "Geehrter Herr! Eine böse langwierige Grippe, die zuerst meine Gattin ergriffen, und von der auch ich sie bekommen hatte, machte, daß ich jede Arbeit ruhen lassen mußte, also auch die Beantwortung Ihres Briefes. Sie werden mich gewiß entschuldigen. Die Photographie, welche ich Ihnen sende, ist ungefähr sechs Jahre alt. Ich habe keine jüngere. Das Ihnen meine Schriften einiges Wohlgefallen machen, freut mich. Mit der Jugend muß wieder Begeisterung für Edles in die Menschheit kommen. Seit einer Reihe von Jahren ist es schnell und erschreckend abwärts gegangen. Die Jugend hat die heilige Pflicht, die reinere Flamme wieder anzufachen, und in sich fort zu nähren. Von dem deutschen Volke hoffe ich es noch. Wenn ich meinen Schriften einen großen Kunstwerth nicht beilegen kann: jene Flamme brennt doch in ihnen, und wo sie erkannt und geliebt wird, macht es mir um der Sache willen Freude ...".
