Description

In the late 1990s, Honda started marketing a version of the popular Civic compact as an Acura, exclusively for the Canadian market. This is the first generation (1997-2000) of the resulting product, the Acura EL. The EL replaced the Acura Integra 4-door sedan for Canada, while the US continued to keep the Integra sedan for several years. (The larger TSX sedan, which is a badge-engineered version of the European Accord, is often considered to be the Integra replacement in the US.)

The EL, built at Honda's Canadian plant in Alliston, Ontario, continued for a second generation through 2005. It was replaced by the CSX for 2006-2011, also a badge-engineered Civic; for 2012 and later, the ILX, again a badge-engineered Civic but with a different exterior, succeeds the lineage, and the ILX, built in Indiana, is also available in the US.

Despite being a Canada-only model, the EL is occasionally seen registered in the US, due to Canadians moving to the US taking their ELs, and easy parts availability in the US due to being a badge-engineered Civic.
