urseof the Halmund itself was always to the east ofZaidan as well as of the other adjoining citiesnorth of Zaidan. The Canal to the east ofNad-i-Ali is no doubt a naturally cut channel, the obvious continuation under natural circum-stances of the river course. The same remarkmight apply to the small channel self-cut tothe west of that place. There are other im-portant channels, such as the Madar-Ab, whichsupplies water to Chiling, Pulki and Sekhuka ;the Kimak canal and the Kasimabad. Beforethe present dam was constructed some eightyyears ago, a previous Band existed, as weshall see, further up the course of the Halmundto the south, and secured the irrigation of thesouthern portion of Sistan, which is now absolutelydry and barren. Dried up canal beds of greatlength are still to be found in southern Sistan. It would be a great undertaking to describeaccurately all these canals and the variouspositions they have occupied at different epochs, Sand Hill R^^lljv^N^N^^^^^^^^ o 6 .:^ > -5)-

Anybody who has visited easternSistan, even in a very dry season, as I did, knows too well how the ground is intersectedin all directions by myriads of natural waterchannels, all fed by the Halmund, so that, unlessone had months of time at ones disposal, itwould hardly be possible to map them all outexactly. During flood time the water flows over theBand and into its natural channel due north upinto the Hamun, where it loses itself. There is a good deal of verdure, trees, andhigh reeds near the banks of the river at theBand, with many snakes, while fish is plentifulin the water and myriads of wild fowl are to beseen. Curious conical temporary graves or mud canoccasionally be seen, some six feet high, the bodybeing, it is said, buried standing within thesecones pr
