Summary[edit]
DescriptionAbstract with bullfinches - Flickr - peganum.jpg |
Taken without a telephoto lens from the bedroom through double glazing, with the digital equivalent of an instamatic, and definitely a contender for Useless Wildlife Shot of the year. Bullfinches come infrequently to this garden but, as a non-birder, I've never seen them anywhere else and I'm just bowled over with the chunky shape of them, the black head and that amazing vibrant pink belly - obvious even in a hopeless shot like this. There was a female (olive grey rather than pink) there too the other day - they're stripping the buds off a small prunus. It has a fairly nondescript blossom and frankly I'd rather have the bullfinches. I understand they used to descend in huge flocks to strip the buds from the orchards in Kent and were a major pest. I don't know if that's still the case (or if Kent still has orchards). Anyway - they're always welcome here. |
