We were admitted to the barabout the same time and traveled for many years whatis known in Illinois as the Eighth Judicial Circuit. In184S, when I first went on the bench, the circuit em-braced fourteen counties, and Mr. Lincoln went withthe court to every county. Railroads were not then inuse, and our mode of travel was either on horsebackor in buggies. Mr. Lincoln was transferredfrom the bar of that circuit to the office of the Presi-dent of the United States, having been without officialposition since he left Congress in 1849. In all theelements that constitute the great lawyer he had fewequals. He was great both at nisi prius and beforean appellate tribunal. He seized the strong points ofa cause, and presented them with clearness and greatcompactness. His mind was logical and direct, andhe did not indulge in extraneous discussion. General-ities and platitudes had no charms for him. An unfail-ing vein of humor never deserted him; and he wasable to claim the attention of court and jury, when thecause was the most uninteresting, by the appropriate-ness of his anecdotes.
