Now we are toldin advance the Government shall be broken up unless wesurrender to those we have beaten, before we take theoffices. In this they are either attempting to play uponus or they are in dead earnest. Either way, if we surren-der, it is the end of us, and of the Government. Theywill repeat the experiment upon us ad libitum. A yearwill not pass till we shall have to take Cuba as a con-dition upon which they will stay in the Union. Theynow have the Constitution under which we have livedover seventy years, and acts of Congress of their ownframing, with no prospect of their being changed; andthey can never have a more shallow pretext for breakingup the Government, or extorting a compromise, thannow. There is in my judgment but one compromiseLincoln to which would really settle the slavery question, and thatHon. J. T. would be a prohibition against acquiring any more ter-11,1861. MS. ritory.
