Summary[edit]
DescriptionAbove Hatton Lock No 43 is an empty pound - geograph.org.uk - 1188207.jpg |
English: Above Hatton Lock No 43 is an empty pound On the Grand Union Canal, this is the pound below Lock No 44 in the Hatton flight of 21 at 18:50 BST. The water is about a metre down. Two hours earlier, having locked up the flight through continuous rain, I noticed the level to be about 30cm down, but unless someone left a paddle open after we went through Lock 43 I can't see how all the water disappeared. The beam and paddle gear in the foreground are at Lock No 43, and No 44 is about 60 metres ahead. Water levels east and west of this length of the canal were full to overflowing.
A situation like this causes total blockage of the canal. Water would have to be supplied by opening paddles in the three locks above this, and that would take a while. Luckily the weather was so bad that hardly anyone (sensible) was on the move at this time. After chucking out time at The Waterman, the pound was half full, (though several pounds had passed over the bar there) and by the next morning, natural overflows had restored the level to normal. The Hatton flight of twenty-one double width locks alters the water level by 146 feet 6 inches (about 48 metres). Despite their size, they fill and empty quickly and the gates are well maintained, so working through them is quite pleasurable ... unless it rains continuously! |
