Summary[edit]
DescriptionAbove Ffynnonau - geograph.org.uk - 12481.jpg |
English: Above Ffynnonau. More of Aberedw Hill. A curse of Welsh hill farms is bracken. It provides a glorious russet to hillwalkers photographs, but in summer it is a toxic light starving mass that destroys agricultural productivity, and harbours pests. Up here on the common, the wind helps keep it down, but in the valleys it grows over 2 metres tall and completely takes over.
The plant we know as bracken is just the leaves of an underground "tree" a vast network of plant tissue in the soil, a single bracken plant can cover many acres. Cut down the fern growth above the ground, the plant lives on - it is very hard to eradicate. |
