Summary[edit]

Description

Gules, a chevron between three pears pendent stalked/slipped or (Abbot) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1 "Abbot, Lord Mayor of London 1638"). This is the family of Abbot of Guildford, Surrey, sons of Maurice Abbot, a clothworker of Guildford in Surrey, who lived in that city in a cottage, the birthplace of the archbishop, ‘by the river’s side, near to the bridge on the north side in St. Nicolas’ parish). Maurice Abbot's five sons included the following three prominent men, who all bore these arms, presumably inherited from a common source, namely the paternal line "Abbot of Guildford":

  • Robert Abbot (1560-1618), Bishop of Salisbury from 1615.
  • George Abbot (1562–1633), Archbishop of Canterbury, born at Guildford on 29 Oct. 1562.
  • Sir Maurice/Morris Abbot (1565–1642), an eminent merchant, governor of the East India Company, and Lord Mayor of London in 1638, the fifth and youngest son.
