Per Metcalfe, W. C., ed. (1886). The Visitations of Hertfordshire, made by Robert Cooke, esq, Clarencieux, in 1572, and Sir Richard St George, Kt, Clarencieux, in 1634, with Hertfordshire pedigrees from Harleian MS 6147. Harleian Society, 1st ser. Vol. 22. London, p.66 [1]: Humberston of Walkarne: Arms. — Quarterly — 1 and 4, Argent, three bars Sable, in chief as many annulets of the second; 2 and 3, Argent, a chevron Ermines between three eagles displayed Sable; a crescent for difference. Crest. — A griffin's head erased Argent, beaked Sable, charged with three annulets in pale of the second. Text from: Janet, www.walkernhistorysociety.co.uk[2]: John Humberstone was named as Keeper of Walkern Park in 1428. Humberstone seems to have been a farmer of some standing, whose memorial is in the church. He lived at Walkern Park at a house called Holmes, likely to have some link with the present Holmes Farm. In 1420, during the reign of Henry V, John Humberstone is described as a yeoman of Walkern and had City connections. There is a record, describing him in 1428 as keeper of the park warren at Walkern. St. Mary the Virgin, Walkern, south wall of the nave, monument to Giles Humberston and his wife, 1627, kneeling figures, arms and an inscription, also other brasses ('Parishes: Walkern', in A History of the County of Hertford: Volume 3, ed. William Page (London, 1912), pp. 151-158. British History Online [3]) |

Notes[edit]
This image might have been cropped to improve composition and/or optimized for white and colour balance and contrast. Please do not upload a modified image without consultation. Images are often JPEGs derived from RAW file format, and reprocessing JPEG files reduces quality. If you believe changes are required, and through discussion this appears appropriate, the author can upload an ammended substitute from the original source, thus maintaining quality. Need a file for hard copy publication?: Noise reduction, camera lens distortion correction, colour balance and sharpening workflow of camera-unsharpened RAW files have been judged through a calibrated HP Dreamcolor Z Display monitor. However, for print media this type of optimizing can often prove problematic depending on particular print output requirements. Where a RAW files exists, I can supply the original in native full size format for third party specific hard copy publication optimizing. Author contact: |
