ABA-NOVÁK, Vilmos (1894, Budapest - 1941, Budapest) Szekler Market 1939-40 Tempera on wood, 123 x 185 cm Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest Of Aba-Novák's pictures of cities, this was the largest, the most monumental which summed up the theatrical beauty of the event. The lowland in front of hill in the distance is covered by wagons. Jugs are surrounded by clay coloured pitchers. This picture praises handicraft, materials and forms, its main object being the jug which slakes one's thirst. Selling does not involve rivalry here, goods do not have to be offered for sale, gestures are reserved and wide, the carriage of market people is dignified and the scene is characterized by pantomime-like stylized rhythms and serenity. Clouds are voluminous and white in the clean mountain air. Reds and blacks of traditional Transylvanian costumes and the white broad-cloth of men's tights catch the eye. Groups of people in the foreground are swinging to the rhythm of a slow dance and the winding dance leads to the swan-like church. Type: genre Time-line: 1926-1950 Form: painting |
