It iseasy to imagine that after their long wanderingsamongst sand and rocky deserts, this valley of Jordan,probably then in a high state of cultivation, withthe greater part of its rich soil irrigated from theriver and other sources by the industrious heathenhusbandmen, would have appeared to the Jews as averitable Promised Land flowing with milk and honey.Personally, however, it is not a climate in whichI should care to live; indeed, what between heatand mosquitoes, most Europeans find it impossible insummer.
