Their survival was the more remarkable from thefact that the vicinity of San Thome is one of themost shark-infested portions of the coast. We naturally felt great pity for them and theywere the recipients of various presents, including avery handsome clasp-knife. That same night there was a disturbance betweenthese two men. It was discovered that the man whohad received the clasp-knife was deliberately attempt-ing to kill his comrade, and had already inflictedsome deep flesh wounds. The trouble arose from aspirit of envy. One man had been allotted a blueblanket and the other a red blanket, and the manwith the clasp-knife was envious of his compan-ions blanket, which he preferred to his own.
