English: A very long long barrow, Bokerley Down This large neolithic barrow, around 150m long, 20m wide and 2m high, lies on a fairly flat part of Martin Down on the Dorset side of the Romano-British Bokerley Dyke. Its axis points SE-NW, with the wider flatter end to the SE and the taller narrower end pointing to (and just a few metres away from) the NE terminal of the Dorset Cursus (now ploughed out and seen only as crop marks). It is suggested that the barrow is contemporary with the cursus and deliberately aligned on its terminal, as are several other long barrows in the neighbourhood. The present day form of the barrow comprises two distinct parts: the taller narrower part (tree-covered) to the north-east and the wider flatter part (grass-covered) to the south-west. These parts are 50m and 90m long, respectively. Although they have been considered to be two cojoined long barrows, probing and aerial photography has revealed them to have a common continuous ditch (now ploughed out). Another suggestion is that the western part is a classic long barrow, with the eastern part as a tail that was added later: the presence of the Dorset Cursus terminal (destroyed, but once present in the field in the foreground) would have prevented expansion in the other direction.
