Text Appearing Before Image:
Petrelas Oceanites oceanicus; but not knowing the larger bird, I sentthe two skins to Mr. Osbert Salvin, F.R.S., just as I receivedthem, the sand of Walney still adhering to their feathers, espe-cially to those of the smaller bird. Mr. Salvin, whose greatkindness I specially desire to acknowledge, has not onlyidentified the unknown bird as a typical example of Pelago-droma marina, which he thinks may perhaps breed in theCanary group, but has compared both skins with the BritishMuseum series, and has further favoured me with some veryvaluable notes, of which I now avail myself. Pelagodroma marina was first noticed during Captain Cooksfirst voyage, and a specimen obtained on the 23d December1768 in lat. 37° S., off the east coast of South America, aboutopposite the mouth of the Rio de la Plata. It was sketched byParkinson, one of the artists who accompanied Captain Cook 1 The exact part of the island where the Petrels were found is the north-western beach, nearly opposite the windmill.

This sketch is nowin the British Museum, where it appears as No. 13 underSolanders unpublished name Procellaria cequorea, in a MS. volumecalled Bankss Drawings. It then became the Frigate Petrelof Lathams Synopsis, and the Procellaria marina of the sameauthors Index Omithologicus. 1 The bird is now known to have a wide range in the southernhemisphere. Goulds collector Gilbert discovered it breedingon some of the small islands lying off Cape Leewin, south-western Australia, in December, where he procured numbers ofits eggs as well as many examples of the adult birds. He alsomet with it on a small island about three miles south of EastWallaby Island in January, when the young birds were almostready to leave their holes (Gould, B. Austr. vol. vii. pi. 61)-The most northern locality where P. marina has been observedhitherto is the Canary Isles. Here it would appear to be notcommon, though many observers have either
