l from King Leopold. They had a long and interesting conversation, and separatedmutually pleased with each other. On the 8th General and Mrs.Grant returned the call of the King at the palace. In the eveningthe King entertained the General at a banquet, at which a bril-liant company was present. MARKET-PLACE AT LIEGE, BELGIUM. >7) IOS AROUND THE WORLD. railway runs almost eastward through the level garden-land ofBelgium, and passes several famous places. Every town has itschurch, many of them large and imposing, with their towers andspires reaching far above the surrounding buildings, and seenfrom afar as the railway enters and leaves them. The city is beautifully situated, thealmost prairie-like appearance of the country west of Liege sud-denly changing to a rolling surface as the city is approached, andgiving it, despite the smoke, an attractive look.
