, was very attentive to General Grant,and the General on his part conceived a high admiration for theViceroy. The great Viceroy, Li-Hung Chang, of Tientsin, says Mr.Young, in his letter to The New York Herald, perhaps to-daythe most powerful subject in China, took the deepest interest inthe coming of General Grant. He was of the same age as theGeneral. They won their victories at the same time—theSouthern rebellion ending in April, the Taeping rebellion inJuly, 1865. As the Viceroy said to a friend of mine, GeneralGrant and I have suppressed the two greatest rebellions knownin history. Those who have studied the Taeping rebellion willnot think that Li-Hung Chang coupled himself with GeneralGrant in a spirit of boasting. How funny it is, he also said,that I should be named Li and General Grants opponent shouldbe called Lee.
