The style of architecture is Byzantine. The central arch has a plain bluefield, with stars, executed in mosaic. Over the doorway in thecentre are the four famous bronze horses, which once ornamentedNeros triumphal arch. They were stolen by Constantine theGreat, and carried to Constantinople, just one thousand yearsago. When the Crusaders took Constantinople, in 1205, thehorses were brought to Venice by one Marino Zeno, and ^lacedin their present position. The interior of the cathedral is wonderful for the richness andprofusion of its Oriental marble, and for its carvings, both of theancient and Middle Ages, and its bronzes and mosaics, from thetenth to the eighteenth century.
