As thevessel bearing General Grant and his party neared the port itwas seen that the shipping was gayly decorated with bunting,and fully 5,000 people were assembled at the landing to welcomethe General. The reception was cordial and hearty in the ex-treme, and touched General Grant very deeply. He had in-tended to proceed direct to Christiana, but after this cordialgreeting he decided to remain at Gottenburg during the day.The day was spent pleasantly, and the next morning the travellersresumed their journey to Christiana, by water. Heacknowledged the greetings of the Norsemen, and at oncedrove to his hotel. Christiana is a handsome city of about 70,000 inhabitants. Itsprincipal public buildings are the Royal Palace and the Univer-sity. Besides these there are numerous other handsome struc-tures. Christiana is the principal port of Norway, the centre ofits foreign trade, and possesses considerable shipping. The Castle of Aggershuus, which stands on an eminence over-looking the city, is one of the principal sights of Christiana, andwas the first place visited by General Grant. The castle wasbuilt in the early part of the fourteenth century. It is stronglyfortified, and commands the city.
