NG FROM THE FOOT. Fig. 3. Anatomy. The internal saphenous vein (A) arises fram the plexus ofveins (B) on the dorsum of the foot, and ascends in front of theinternal malleolus (C). It is accompanied by filaments of theinternal saphenous nerve (D). Fig. 4. Operation. The venous circulation is arrested by means of a bandage asin the arm, placed about two finger-breadths above the malleoli. The foot may be then put into a bath of hot water. After aminute or so the surgeon places the foot upon his knee, and withcare fixes the internal saphenous vein, which otherwise rollsunder the finger. He then punctures the vessel, as in bleedingfrom the arm. The blood rarely flows in a jet : it is therefore customary toplace the foot again into the hot water, till the colour of thewater, or the time of immersion, leads one to believe that a suf-ficient qiiantity of blood has been obtained. The dressing consists of a little square compress held upon thewound by a figure 8 or stirrup bandage. P1.5. Ficr 1

BLEEDING FEOM THE JUGULAR (Fig. 2, B), The external jugular vein extends from behind the angle of thelower jaw to the middle of the clavicle. Directed obliquely frombefore backwards, it crosses the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle, being covered by the skin and platysma. Operation. The patient seated, or, still better, reclining, the circulationin the vessel is prevented by compression of the vessel a littleabove the clavicle. For this purpose a thick compress is pressedupon the vessel by a bandage, which is passed around the neckand beneath the opposite axilla. When the vessel is sufficientlyswelled the surgeon fixes it with the left index finger, and thenmakes the puncture. The opening which is made about the middleof the neck should be large, and in direction at right angles tothe fibres of the pl
