Summary[edit]

Description

Christopher Lutara has seen grim times on his 6,000 acre farm in northern Uganda.

Once home to 5,000 cattle, it was looted and went to seed when he was chased off the land by the Lord's Resistance Army, not once but three times.

Now that peace has returned, Christopher has plans to make sunflower oil from his own sunflowers.

He is benefitting from a UKaid match-funding scheme, which will provide 40% of the money he needs to buy the machinery to begin processing oil, and thereby providing jobs to the local economy.

"This scheme taps into what local farmers have been crying out for years," says Christopher. "The biggest challenge the agriculture sector faces in Uganda is unaffordable capital."
