My lil' buddy! I found this snake at the site of the old Rick's Market (my Dad's store) in Springdale in June of '77. I was about 9at the time and almost put my hand right on it as I sat down on the dirt. I thought it looked quite unique with the stripes so I caught it in a box and showed everyone nearby. Nobody had ever seen a rattler with stripes running the length of it's body, and somebody called the Rangers. They were dumbfounded as well and soon there was special "reptologists" being flown in to check it out. Well, the snake disappeared and I tried a couple times to get it back from the park. The last time I tried, they told me it was dead and showed it to me in a jar of formaldehyde being stored in a dark storage room in the basement of the old visitors center. It did not look near as impressive in the jar. That was my first experience with federal government employees. I learned a few things about them back then in '77. Don't tell them a damn thing, watch your back and your property, and do your thing without them!
