Southern Ontario are locatedon the shores of the lakes and rivers named above. The following briefdescription will give an inidcation of their size and commercial importance.Toronto, the prosperous capital of Ontario and the second cityin Canada, is situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, andhas a population of about 225,000. It is the principal commercialand distributing point of Central Canada and the seat of the University ofToronto and many other leading educational institutions. Its mercantileimportance is indicated by the extent of the financial transactions of itsbanks, the bank clearings for 1900 amounting to $513,695,401, an increaseof $9,222,554 over the previous year. The value of the exports from Torontoduring the year ending June the 30th, 1900, was $9,506,911, and the valuetor the imports for the same year was $31,787,053. The accessibility of all the picturesque region to the north bordering onthe Muskoka Lakes and the Georgian Bay, and the central position ofToronto with regard to other points of interest, result in attracting to it avery large number of tourists every season. It possesses excellent hotelaccommodations, banking and telegraph facilities, and one of the finest andbest-equipped electric street car services on the Continent.
