Summary[edit]
DescriptionA sign of Merrow's Past. - geograph.org.uk - 128574.jpg |
English: Epsom Road, Merrow, Surrey. A sign of Merrow's past. On the Merrow Downs, about 1 mile south of the Epsom Road, is the site of the former Merrow Racecourse. The Victorians raced here but now this area of the North Downs is covered by Guildford's Golf Course. The sign shows a finishing post, horse and rider against a rail. To the east (right) of this photograph is Merrow's pub - the Horse and Groom - another reminder of the local racing history. The bus is a London & Country vehicle. London & Country are now part of Arriva, although the current Arriva Guildford & West Surrey division was a sub-division of London & Country at the time, trading under the "Guildford & West Surrey" name, but with the same livery as London & Country. London & Country did serve Guildford, but from places further afield such as Leatherhead and Kingston, and buses served Merrow on their way into Guildford. Arriva withdrew from these areas in around 2001-2, and these types of routes are no longer run by Arriva (nowadays they are mostly run by Countryliner). Arriva Guildford & West Surrey still do, however, run a local town circular service from Guildford that serves this road. |
