o, Shoshone, and Manitou Springs are near the center of the city, as is also the splendid bathing establishment opened in 1884. Manitou has an elevation of 6,297 ^^^^^ ^^^ Pikes Peak rises but a few miles away to the height of 14147 feet. A novel feature of our stay will be a trip to the Pikes Peak. summit of the mountain by the Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway. This road, which was opened tothe pubhc in the summer of 1891, is the loftiest of its kind in the world. Fromthe station near the Ute Iron Spring to the top of the mountain the distance iseight and three-quarters miles. The average elevation overcome is 844.8 feetper mile, or 16 per cent, and the maximum is 25 per cent. During the stay at Colorado Springs or ManitouThe Garden of the Gods. there will be a carriage drive to the Garden of theGods, which lies east of Manitou. It is a park-like tract, inclosed by cliffs and hills, and scattered about its surface arefantastically formed rocks, carved by the elements in past ages. 93

Another day will be devoted to a side trip ofCripple Creek and Victor, unsurpassed grandeur over the scenic line of theColorado Springs & Cripple Creek District Rail-wav, to Cripple Creek and Victor. This magnificent trip occupies abouteight hours, and brings under inspection an almost endless succession ofsuperb mountain and cafion views. Denver, which lies at the western border of theDenver. plains, dates back to the Pikes Peak gold ex- citement of 1858-59. In i860 it was a stragglingcamp, consisting principally of log cabins and tents. In the last decade thecity has made giant strides, and must now be classed among the great citiesof the country.
