| Description |
English: A railway milepost. This railway milepost is located beside the Weavers Way, which here follows a dismantled railway trackbed of the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. See > 1062497 for a wider view. The Railways Clauses Consolidation Act (passed in 1845) compelled all railway companies to provide for their passengers a means of determining the distance travelled as at this time the price of fares depended on distance. There are whole mileposts as well as half and quarter posts and these historical markers are still in use as infrastructure reference points, although in some cases the distances shown are based upon points that no longer exist and hence no longer valid. |
