Inscription in cartouche: al-Sultan Fath 'Ali Shah Qajar Inscription below left: ...Muhammad Sadiq More large-scale painting survive of Fath 'Ali Shah (r.1797-1834) than of any other Qajar monarch, the result of an enormous effort to replicate images of the ruler for display throughout his realm. The present painting appears to have been painted at the beginning of his reign. and towards the end of Muhammad Sadiq's career as painter to the court from the 1740s-90s.. Muhammad Sadiq was known for his delicate facial features, including cherry lips and languid eyes, a landscape background and a room rendered in the European manner, with mottled walls representing marble.
