TheHudson river opens a natural navigablechannel of 150 miles to Albany, andwith the vaiious canals and railroadsheretofore mentioned ; while the Eastriver communicates with Long Islandsound, which pours much trade into thiscity. Lines of the most capacious andsplendid steamboats lead daily, and al-most hourly, in all directions ; and newchannels of communication are now inpreparation, which will still further fa-cilitate and extend the great commer-cial relations of New York. The streets in the lower and oldestpart of the city are generally narrow andcrooked; but in the upper portion, towhich many of the inhabitants havechanged their residences within a fewyears, they are straight, broad, wellbuilt, and more agreeable.
