Dutch/ English Gister vertelde ik dat ik 's ochtends vroeg al op pad was in de Biesbosch. Om 04:30 in de ochtendschemer was ik al paraat om het wandelpad op te gaan. Gympen aan en lopend op het gras langs het pad wandelde ik de absolute stilte in. Voorzichtig piepte het eerste ochtendlicht over de kim. Geen pratende mensen, geen honden, geen auto's in de verte, geen geluiden van de Moerdijkindustrie en zelfs de langsvarende schepen maakten nauwelijks geluid. Een eind op weg begonnen de eerste vogels zich te roeren met voorzichtig gekwebbel. Niet te hard want de eerste is voor de poes. Net halverwege het pad wat over de aanwas van de Nieuwe Merwede loopt, hoorde ik een voor mij onbekend geluid. Tjop tjop tjop.......tjop tjop tjop tjop......tjop. Nieuwsgierig geworden naar wat het zou kunnen zijn hurkte ik neer langs de rivierbedding. Onder een half in het water hangende afgebroken tak kwam het vandaan. Het kwam niet overeen met de deining van het water. Dat kon het niet zijn. Zachtjes vervolgde het ge-tjop. En toen plotseling op een afstand van nauwelijks een armlengte kwam van rechts een bever langs glijden door het water. Het dier had mij niet geroken en niet opgemerkt. Als versteend van verbazing en een gevoel om het uit te roepen onderdrukkend bleef ik doodstil zitten en keek hem na hoe hij langzaam naar links de rivierbedding volgde. Snel ben ik stroomopwaarts gelopen, geen geluid makend. Daar bij de volgende inham zag ik langs de waterrand het water in kringetjes bewegen. Daar lag hij etend van de rietwortels. Tjop tjop tjop... Bij het wegzwemmen heb ik m'n filmcamera aangezet om toch in ieder geval iets te hebben. Hier een "still" uit een paar seconden beeld van een wonderlijke ontmoeting. (Daar het nog een bescheiden ochtendschemer was is het beeld ook wat verhelderd.) Yesterday I told, I was already on my way early in the Biesbosch area. At 4:30 in the morning dusk, I was already ready to go on the walking path. Sneakers on my feet and walking on the grass along the path I walked into the absolute silence. Carefully the first morning light squeaked over the horizon. No talking people, no dogs, no cars in the distance, no noises from the nearby industry and even the passing ships hardly sounded. A long way on, the first birds started to stir with cautious gibbering. Not too loud because the first is food for the cat. Just halfway down the path that runs over the marsh of the New Merwede, I heard a sound unknown to me. Tjop tjop tjop ....... tjop tjop tjop ...... tjop. Curious what it could be I crouched down along the riverbed. It came from under a broken branch half hanging in the water. It did not match the swell of the water. It could not be that. Softly it continued. And then suddenly at a distance of barely an arm's length from the right a beaver slipped through the water. The animal had not smelled or noticed me. As if petrified in amazement and a feeling to cry out, I remained sitting still and watched him follow the river bed slowly to the left. Quickly I walked upstream, making no sound. There, at the next inlet, I saw the water moving in circles along the water's edge. There he was eating from the reed roots. Tjop tjop tjop ... When he swam away, I turned on my film camera to at least have something. Here a "still" from a few seconds of a wonderful encounter. (Because it was still a modest morning dusk, the image is also clarified) |
