Text Appearing Before Image:
fthe thigh and other parts eflfleurage is done with the side orthe ball of the hand, or if stronger effects are wanted, withthe knuckles (Fig. 18). Both hands may work simultaneously if the part to bemassaged is well supported, and if no inflammatory conditionexists. Frequently one hand has to support or to steady thelimb. Often, for instance, in the upper arm the flexors andextensors are alternately treated, one hand supporting andthe other massaging. The hand, after finishing the centrip- 80 TECHNIC OF MASSAGE etal stroke usually glides down toward the peripheral endof the muscle, touching the skin lightly, and begins the samemovement over again. As to the speed, no special direction can be given, since itdepends on the effect wanted. In irritable cases a slow, gentlestroke may produce a very marked effect, while in treatingan atrophic limb of an otherwise healthy person, considerablespeed up to fifty or sixty times a minute or more with a gooddeal of pressure may safely be applied.

Fig. 17.—Effleurage of triceps. As has been said before, effleurage may be used over anypart of the body, not only over the muscles; but it shouldalways follow definite anatomical outlines. We have sometimes seen insufficiently trained persons applyeffleurage to the forearm, elbow and upper arm in one strokewithout any anatomical discrimination. Such a method is RUBBING MANIPULATIONS 81 entirely unscientific and may involve great dangers if theelbow-joint is at all affected. The chief aim of effleurage is to empty the veins andlymphatic vessels, to press their contents in physiologicaldirections, and, as the elastic walls of the vessels tend tospread and suck blood and lymph from behind, to act as a
