er, and two water receivers atbottom, immediately below the steam receivers and connected to them bydowncast pipes. Extending above these water receivers are rectangularsection chambers or headers, and similar chambers extend from and belowthe steam receivers. These chambers are connected by a pair of pipesplaced diagonally across the fire and connected at their remote ends by ajunction box. The water, therefore, circulates by rising from the waterreceivers into the chambers, passing upwards through the tubes connectedto it through the junction boxes, and so through the second set of tubes tothe chambers underneath the steam receivers, and from them into the steam 426 MANUAL OF MARINE ENGINEERING. receivers themselves, and, finally, back again by the downcasts to the waterreceivers. It will be seen that the circulation is positive and regular Thetubes thoroughly intercept the heat in its passage from the grate to thechimney. They are straight, and easily examined, cleaned, or removed.

Fig. 154.—Stirling Boiler (Marine design). The Miyabara Boiler is somewhat like the Hohenstein, but consists oftwo sets of cylindrical drums placed parallel, and some 6 to 8 feet apart;each set consists of 3, one above the other. The middle drum of each isconnected to the top and bottom drums of the opposite set by tubes 2 inchesto 3 inches diameter. The top drum in each set is connected to the bottomone by downtakes. It is very simple, and easy to make, having straight THORNYCROFT-HIAUSHALL BOILER. 427 tubes with a good inclination; the hot gases will be well broken up, anddistributed, and limited spaces are provided for them to come in contactwith the outer casing. The Thornycroft-Marshall Boiler (fig. 156) is the third new one, withlarge tubes, that seems a good design for marine or land. Its sectional form, which is the better for ship use, consists of a steam drum, with headersstanding vertically downwards, capable of taking two vertical rows of tubes.
