connection with each of these there is a small elastic bag or.ampulla. One of the bags is fixed to the free end of the sound, and communicateswith one of the air-passages. The other bag is placed in connection with thesecond air-passage in the sound, and at such a distance, that, when the former baglies within the ventricle, the latter is in the auricle. Each bag and air-tube inconnection with it, is connected with a Mareys tambour, Fig. 28, provided with alever which inscribes its movements upon a revolving cylinder. Any variationof pressure within the auricle or ventricle will affect the elastic ampulla?, and thusraise or depress the lever. Care must be taken that the writing-points of thelevers, are placed exactly above each other. A tracing of the cardiac impulse istaken simultaneously by means of a cardiograph attached to a separate tambour. It has still to be determined whether the auricles and ventricles actalternately, so that at the moment of the beginning of the ventricular

The latter view wassupported by Harvey, Bonders, Schiflf, and others, while Haller andmany of the more recent observers support the view that the action ofthe auricles and ventricles alternates. In the case of Frau Serafin, whose heart was exposed, v. Ziemssen and Ter Gregorianz obtainedcurves from the auricles, which showed that the contraction of theauricles continued even after the commencement of the ventricularsystole. In Mareys curve (Fig. 29) the contraction of the ventricle isrepresented as following that of the auricle. 52. Pathological Disturbances of the Cardiac Impulse. Change in the P
