If sugar is present, fermentation willoccur in the course of twelve hours, and the carbon dioxide formedrise to the top of the tube, gradually displacing more and more ofthe urine or mercury as the amount of the gas increases. It is easyto demonstrate that the gas thus formed is carbon dioxide byintroducing a small piece of caustic soda into the urine, when,owing to absorption of the carbon dioxide, the liquid will again risein the tube. Very convenient for this purpose also are the saccha-rimetric tubes of Einhorn (Fig. 100) or Lohnstein3 (Fig. 102),which are employed as just described, a little mercury being pouredinto the bent limb to guard against escape of gas. Plienvl-Glueosazoii Crystals obtained, from a Diabe:: : Urine CARBOHYDRATES. 441 absence of sugar, it will always be well to make a control-test withnormal urine—t. e., to prepare a similar tube with normal urinemixed with yeast, and to allow this to stand at the same temperature.It a positive result is thus obtained, there ean be no doubt as to the pres-ence of a fermentable substance in the urine. This, however, is notnecessarily glucose, as other carbohydrates, such as lactose, maltose, andlevulose, may likewise undergo fermentation. Still, if large amountsof gas are obtained, and if Trommers test also yields a positive result,it will be fairly safe to regard the substance present as glucose. Fig. 100.
