Summary[edit]
DescriptionA man stands in front of where his house used to be, Sindh, December 2010 (5331018354).jpg |
Mushtaq, a village elder, pictured in front of the mud and debris-strewn plot of land where his house used to stand, a few miles outside the city of Jacobabad in Pakistan's Sindh Province. Like hundreds of thousands of others, his home was washed away when flood waters inundated the area following 10 year's worth of rain which fell in northern Pakistan in July and August 2010. Mushtaq's village is one of hundreds that are being helped to recover from the disaster by the NGO Mercy Corps, with the support of funding from the British government's Department for International Development. Mercy Corps have installed clean water pumps and basic sanitation in the village, to help meet people's basic needs as they return home after the flood waters subside. But for people like Mushtaq, clean water is just the first step on the road to recovery. Shelter remains a huge priority - many thousands of families will spend this winter living in tents. "We are grateful for the clean water and the latrines, as people were getting sick before, but now they are not", says Mushtaq. "But somehow we must rebuild our home. We lost almost everything in the floods. Life is very hard now, but we hope to get some seed so that we can grow rice and wheat again and support ourselves once more."
