Description |
English: Probably the most well-known vessel from the Treasure of Nagyszentmiklós, this medallion ewer is of wrought gold in one piece with relief ornament carried out in the chased repoussé technique. The four medallions framed with ornamental ribbons present figurative scenes. Shown here: a warrior in armor leads a prisoner by his hair, while the severed head of an enemy hangs from his saddle. Like the other vessels found in this hoard, this medallion ewer was originally designed as a bottle and was later adapted with a handle. Remnants of the handle are still to be found on the ewer's mouth and corpus. |
