s yellowish; anal dark. A tinge of purpleon the sides, Avhere the scales shine as if pearly. The darkspots on the body are also spread over the dorsal fin and tail;and even on the loAver portion of the transparent cornea (ofthe eye.) In an example from IMalham Tarn of much less size, themuscular structure appeared more decided; the tail broader andmore round; dorsal and anal fins more developed; a moredecided tinge of yellow along the sides; the adipose fin reddish;and the spots proportionally larger, Avith a warm tinge. In a comparison of several examples, Mr. Thompson foundpermanent differences between the sexes; the teeth being con-siderably stronger in the male; the distance from eye to snoutgreater; and the form of the operculum is different, that of thefemale approaching in roundness to that of the Salmon. Insome instances the spots in the male have a pale circle of dullorange round them. I found the fin rays of the dorsal to be twelve, anal ten, pectoral thirteen, caudal twenty.

The catalogue of books which have been writtenon the art and pleasure of fishing for it has amounted to avolume; and seldom docs a season pass without the addition ofa new one, or a new edition of one that is old; for anglersare almost as fond of talking or reading of their art as ofpractising it. Under such circumstances the history of theTrout has a strong claim on our attention; and so much themore as this fish is liable to a wide extent of variation inits aj)pearance and habits; both of whi
