Specific Characters.—The eye is placed in a large naked patcli,wkich is broad at tke base of tbe beak, -wbere the feathers ofthe forehead form one point; tarsi long; legs vivid. Plumagerose colour. Length from five to sis feet, and sometimes longer. The WKite or Common Pelican, or The Pelican ofauthors, inhabits in Europe the same localities as thosementioned for the Dalmatian Pelican. It has occurredalso, but accidentally, in France, Italy, and Sicily. Ayoung subject was shot by M. Hollandre on the 4th.of October, 1838, in the pond of Fourligny, in theDepartment of Moselle, and is recorded in his Faunede la Moselle, p. 191. Degland records the capture

WHITE PELICAN. 175 of one in June, 1849, in the neiglibourliood of Guete,and three others near Libourne, in the Department ofthe Gironde, which he supposes were flying to thegrounds in which they ordinarily lived, and whichwere then the theatre of war. Mr. W. H. Simpson(Ibis, vol. iii, p. 366,) describes what must havebeen a magnificent sight, namely, a flock of Pelicans,which he supposed were of this species, numberingseveral thousands, flying northwards in the Dobrudscha.Lord Lilford (Ibis, vol. ii, p. 355,) says that theWhite Pelicans pass in enormous numbers over Corfusouthwards in November, and that a few remain aboutthe coasts of Epirus throughout the winter. Count Miihle says,—This Pelican is also very rarein Greece. I believe that it comes there to breed, butis only seen singly, now and then in winter. Amongall my specimens of Pelicans I have only one of thisspecies, which was killed in April in the lake ofMissolonghi. It was a female, and about to lay, as ama
